“Once again the federal government has reached its ‘debt ceiling,’ and once again Congress is poised to authorize an increase in government borrowing. Between its ever-growing bureaucracies, expanding entitlements, and overseas military entanglements, the federal government is borrowing roughly one billion dollars every day to pay its bills. Federal law limits the amount of debt the U.S. Treasury may carry, and the current amount-- a whopping $7.4 trillion-- has been reached once again by a spendthrift federal government. Total federal spending, which now exceeds $2 trillion annually, once took more than 100 years to double. Today it doubles in less than a decade, and the rate is accelerating.”

- Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), Texas Straight Talk, 10/25/04

“Michael Dukakis's Snoopy-like tank ride did nothing to burnish his defense credentials in 1988, other than to highlight his utter inadequacy on national-security issues. And photographs of John Kerry brandishing a double-barreled shotgun while emerging from an Ohio cornfield with a dead goose will not change his well-earned image as the leader of the most anti-gun rights presidential ticket in history.”

- Washington Times editorial, 10/24/04

The Detroit News has never endorsed a Democrat presidential candidate. Twice, way back in the FDR years, it chose not to endorse either candidate. So the Detroit News is a well-established and respected conservative editorial page. And it declined to endorse John Kerry OR George W. Bush on Sunday.

The reasoning for the non-endorsement is a well-articulated stinging indictment of both candidates. Whether or not you’ve made up your mind already in this race, it would be instructive to read this editorial. Go to:

Kerry Supporter: Kerry's going to take PA.

Mrs. John Edwards: I know that.

Kerry Supporter: I'm just worried there's going to be riots afterwards.

Mrs. John Edwards: Uh, well, not if we win.

“The NYTIMES urgently reported on Monday in an apparent October Surprise: The Iraqi interim government and the U.N. nuclear agency have warned the United States that nearly 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives are now missing from one of Iraq's most sensitive former military installations. Jumping on the TIMES exclusive, Dem presidential candidate John Kerry blasted the Bush administration for its failure to ‘guard those stockpiles.’“...But tonight, NBCNEWS reported: The 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives were already missing back in April 10, 2003 -- when U.S. troops arrived at the installation south of Baghdad! An NBCNEWS crew embedded with troops moved in to secure the Al-Qaqaa weapons facility on April 10, 2003, one day after the liberation of Iraq. According to NBCNEWS, the HMX and RDX explosives were already missing when the American troops arrived.”

- The Drudge Report, 10/25/04

“During the second presidential debate, John Kerry had this to say in explanation for his vote in favor of the war with Iraq: ‘I went to meet with the members of the Security Council in the week before we voted. I went to New York. I talked to all of them to find out how serious they were about really holding Saddam Hussein accountable...’

“We wondered at the time if he was telling the truth about his diplomatic efforts, and now the Washington Times has evidence that he wasn't: ‘Of the five ambassadors on the Security Council in 2002 who were reached directly for comment, four said they had never met Mr. Kerry. The four also said that no one who worked for their countries' U.N. missions had met with Mr. Kerry either.’

“(I)n addition to the debate, (Kerry) claimed during a 2003 speech at the Council on Foreign Relations that ‘I sat with the French and British, Germans, with the ENTIRE Security Council, and we spent a couple of hours talking about what they saw as the path to a united front in order to be able to deal with Saddam Hussein.’ At the very least, this would seem to be one of those exaggerations. Oh well, at least he didn't say it was seared--seared--into his memory.”

“It's one of the many lies that the book advances. To me the most interesting lie, John O'Neill, that I would submit to you that you should answer, is, you make a lying claim that John Kerry's antiwar activity prolonged the amount of time that prisoners of war were held in Vietnam. . . . That's a lie, John O'Neill! Keep lying, it's all you do! . . . Lies! . . . Which is not in John O'Neill's book, 'cause it's a lie! . . . That's a lie! It's another lie! That's a lie! Absolute lie! You lie in that book endlessly! . . . You lie about documents endlessly! . . . You're just lying about it!

“And you lied about Thurlow's Bronze Star! You lied about it as long as you could until the New York Times found the wording of what was on the citation that you as a lying writer refused to put in your pack of lies! . . . Disgusting, lying book! . . . You have no standards, John O'Neill, as an author, and you know it! It's a pack of lies! You are unfit to publish! . . . He just lied to you! He spews out this filth! Point to his name on the report, you liar! Point to his name, you liar! . . . You just spew lies! . . .

“I just hate the lies of John O'Neill. I hate lies. It's not an argument; they're proven lies. . . . O'Neill's a liar, he's been a liar for 35 years about this, and he's found other liars [unintelligible]. . . . They lied! . . . They're lying somewhere! . . . Lies! Just tell me the initials, you liar! Creepy liar! . . . You are a liar who makes things up! . . . You want the lies! That's how you make your living, on lies!”

If you’re not subscribed to DC Confidential yet, you missed the link in yesterday’s edition where you can actually watch this stunning liberal meltdown on camera. OK, I’m a softy. Here’s the link for the rest of you, too:

Speaking of DC Confidential, another item in yesterday’s edition reported on how the union boss of the letter carrier’s union went “postal” on a Bush-Cheney attorney who dared to suggest that maybe some Bush literature wasn’t being delivered properly in Florida. Well, it appears it’s not just in Florida.

A good friend of ours was in South Carolina working for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jim DeMint over the weekend. She reports that volunteers were walking neighborhoods attaching flyers TO mailboxes, not putting them IN the mailboxes. You see, the post office has monopoly access to what goes in YOUR mailbox.

Nevertheless, our friend notes that a postal worker was following the volunteers, removing the flyers and throwing them on the ground. Not only is this a violation of free speech’s littering. How is it that union activists get away with things such as this? If you or I were caught in this kind of monkey-business, we’d have the book thrown at us.

For anyone still not sure of the Libertarian Party’s true and only motivation this election cycle - to defeat Bush, not elect its candidate - columnist Bob Novak strips away mask:

“The Libertarian Party, appealing to Democrats for funds, is targeting the battleground state of Wisconsin as a place where they could make the difference in preventing President Bush's re-election. Wisconsin Libertarians are asking money for their presidential candidate, computer consultant Michael Badnarik.

“Their appeal promises Democrats that ‘we will use 100 percent of your donations to run television and radio commercials that specifically target conservative voters who might otherwise vote for Bush. We don't want Bush to win in Wisconsin any more than you do,’ says the Libertarian Web site. ‘As a Kerry supporter, you may disagree with our message, but you win and we win when you donate to this project and get your friends to do likewise.’ “

The LP is, and continues to be, nothing but a “spoiler” party. Spoiled sports actually.

Speaking of the Libertarian Party...

One of Badnarik’s most ardent supporters has been haranguing me for the last two days, maintaining that the LP presidential candidate is NOT a pacifist...although he has yet to provide a single statement indicating under what circumstance his candidate would ever use “violence or war” as president of the United States.

The supporter quotes Tommy Jefferson from Jefferson’s first inaugural address articulating a foreign policy of “Honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none" without mentioning that Jefferson himself made an “exception” to that policy shortly thereafter when he sent the fledgling U.S. Navy to the Barbary act that Badnarik would certainly characterize as “international military adventurism.”

But if the Badnarikians (or is it Badnarikites) wish to play semantics, I’ll withdraw the charge of pacifism and simply note, for the record, that in the area of national security, Mr. Badnarik is simply a naïve fool.

Feel better, Tom?

I have to disagree with your comments that with regard to national security, Michael Badnarik is a naïve fool. He's not a fool; he's a coward. There is a clear and present danger to the US from Islamofascists. Rather than deal with it as W is, the LP has joined the hate America movement of the Democrat Left. Better to see NYC in rubble than disappoint LP kooks like Thomas Knapp and Carol Moore.
