THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS CARDS

“A veteran U.S. mail carrier from Worcester (Massachusetts) was caught red-handed last month stealing a Target gift card from the Auburn post office and using it to buy items from the store, officials said. Federal investigators were hot on the trail of would-be-grinch Kenneth Bobin, 45. The letter was actually inserted into the mail stream by authorities. Yesterday, Bobin was charged with stealing mail. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Bobin, presented with surveillance video from Target, admitted to stealing the letter and many others during his 18 years as a postal employee at the Auburn post office, according to a federal court affidavit.”

- Boston Herald, 12/14/04

IS IT SAFE?

“A story out of New Jersey earlier this week continues to prove the point that we are no safer at airports today than we were before 9/11. Baggage screeners at Newark Liberty International Airport lost a fake bomb that was planted in luggage for a training exercise. It was later recovered by security officials in Amsterdam, after making its way onto a flight there. The ‘bomb’ even had wires, a detonator and a clock. Hard to miss, but the TSA did.”

- Talk show host Neal Boortz

CHRISTMAS ADVICE FOR DEMOCRATS

“I know something the Democratic Party can do right now that will improve its standing and increase its popularity. It can be done this week. Its impact will be quick and measurable. It is this: Stop the war on religious expression in America. Have Terry McAuliffe come forward and announce that the Democratic Party knows that a small group of radicals continue to try to ‘scrub’ such holidays as Christmas from the public square…

“Have Terry McAuliffe...put up a big sign that says ‘Merry Christmas’ on the sidewalk in front of the Democratic National Committee Headquarters on South Capitol Street. . . . This would be taking a stand on an issue that roils a lot of people, and believe me those people don't think conservatives are scrubbing America of Christmas, they think it's liberals; and they don't think it's Republicans, they think it's Democrats. Confound them, Terry! Come forward with a stand. . . . Pick up that Christmas tree, Terry, take it outside and put a star on top, stand next to it, yell Merry Christmas and ring a bell.”

- Columnist Peggy Noonan

TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY’S OVER

“The Democratic Party is in disarray and going in the wrong direction. . . . Current Democratic members of the US House and Senate will never again be in the majority in their professional lifetimes. That realization will lead to a larger-than-normal Democratic retirements meaning just maintaining their current levels in the House and Senate may be impossible. . . .It is time for the Democrats to quit wringing their hands and get to work to repair the damage they have done to themselves. It is time to move on.”

- Rich Galen’s “Mullings,” 12/16/04

PROPAGANDA MACHINE OF THE GOP

“No one can honestly question my commitment to pro-life, pro-family, conservative causes. That being said, the Religious Right, as it now exists, scares me. For one reason, on the whole, the Religious Right has obviously and patently become little more than a propaganda machine for the Republican Party in general and for President G.W. Bush in particular. This is in spite of the fact that both Bush and the Republican Party in Washington, D.C., have routinely ignored and even trampled the very principles which the Religious Right claims to represent.

“Therefore, no longer does the Religious Right represent conservative, Christian values. Instead, they represent their own self-serving interests at the expense of those values. It also appears painfully obvious to me that in order to sit at the king's table, the Religious Right is willing to compromise any principle, no matter how sacred. As such, it has become a hollow movement. Sadly, the Religious Right is now a movement without a cause, except the cause of advancing the Republican Party.”

- Columnist Chuck Baldwin

COULTERGEIST: FROM BORKING TO SHRUMMING

“Lawyer Mark Geragos should go into business with political consultant Bob Shrum and defend Sen. Arlen Specter's claim to the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee. They should advertise exclusively on MSNBC. Maybe they could even get Al Gore to endorse them and hire Howard Dean as their spokesman. Our motto: ‘A HUMILIATING DEFEAT EVERY TIME – OR YOUR MONEY BACK!’“...This year, Shrum racked up his eighth loss in an unblemished 0-8 record of losing Democratic presidential campaigns. He's the embodiment of the Democratic Party ideal: Screw up, keep getting hired or promoted. One more loss and his last name officially becomes a verb, as in ‘we were ahead by 6 points but we ended up 'shrumming.' ‘ At least Shrum's client only has to go back to the Senate. Geragos' client Scott Peterson has been sentenced to death.”

- Columnist Ann Coulter

NANNY-STATERS AT 60,000 FEET

“Now the ‘water cooler’ talk is all about the FCC giving us permission to use our cell phones whilst winging our way across the Fruited Plain. Let's think (as opposed to ‘feel’) about this…

“First, doesn't it strike you as a tad condescending our Public Servants are cast - or cast themselves - as ‘granting permission’ to us to exercise various legal activities, like talking on a phone? If you had a maid, would you ask her permission to make yourself a sandwich? Would you ask your gardener if he would permit you to ride the lawnmower?“...Our Servants are still studying the only relevant issue in all this blather: Do cell phones hamper the safe operation of the aircraft? If the Wizards of Ohms conclude those little transmitters do not represent a safety hazard, then ridiculous nanny regulations should be dropped immediately; freedom of expression can then be exercised and enjoyed at 60,000 feet. Don't like it? Call Amtrak and reserve a seat in the Quiet Car.”

- Talk show host Brian Wilson

LEAVING TRADITIONAL GRADING SYSTEM BEHIND

“Albuquerque Public Schools is following a growing trend of scrapping traditional grading systems for one that measures No Child Left Behind Act proficiency levels. Within a few years, A's, B's, C's, D's, and F's will be history on Albuquerque elementary and middle school report cards. In their place will be a new system of ‘performance levels’ - emerging, nearing proficient, proficient and advanced - that evaluates students against New Mexico education standards.

“APS officials say this new system is necessary in a No Child Left Behind environment. Because the federal law requires annual testing on state standards, they say the new grading shows how well students are learning those standards so they will do well on tests. ‘The traditional report card doesn't meet our needs anymore in New Mexico,’ says Denise Brigman, principal of John Baker Elementary.”

- Albuquerque Journal, 12/15/04

New Mexico: Within a few years, A's, B's, C's, D's, and F's will be history on Albuquerque elementary and middle school report cards. Blithering idiots! Changing the name of a thing does not change the thing. An "A" still works for "advanced," a "B" still works for "proficient," a "C" still works for "nearing proficient," a "D" still works for "emerging," and an "F" still works for grading school boards that think they need to change the name of a thing for no good reason. Do you happen to have the e-mail addresses for Denise Brigman, principal of John Baker Elementary, and the appropriate school board?

Re: Albuquerque Public Schools replacing the traditional grading system to "emerging, nearing proficient, proficient, and advanced": As a parent, I welcome the change!! The new system will describe exactly where my child is functioning in achieving the State educational standards. Plus, the descriptive terms are a more positive way to express my child's level. Most parents understand how hurtful and discouraging a D or F feels, to both parent and child.

The old A, B, C, D, and F system is often vague, and teachers are not always consistent as to what level of performance earns each letter grade. Tell me, what is so sacred about the A, B, C, D, & F system, anyway?!
